beorn7	0f760f63dd	lint: Revamp our linting rules, mostly around doc comments Several things done here: - Set `max-issues-per-linter` to 0 so that we actually see all linter warnings and not just 50 per linter. (As we also set `max-same-issues` to 0, I assume this was the intention from the beginning.) - Stop using the golangci-lint default excludes (by setting `exclude-use-default: false`. Those are too generous and don't match our style conventions. (I have re-added some of the excludes explicitly in this commit. See below.) - Re-add the `errcheck` exclusion we have used so far via the defaults. - Exclude the signature requirement `govet` has for `Seek` methods because we use non-standard `Seek` methods a lot. (But we keep other requirements, while the default excludes completely disabled the check for common method segnatures.) - Exclude warnings about missing doc comments on exported symbols. (We used to be pretty adamant about doc comments, but stopped that at some point in the past. By now, we have about 500 missing doc comments. We may consider reintroducing this check, but that's outside of the scope of this commit. The default excludes of golangci-lint essentially ignore doc comments completely.) - By stop using the default excludes, we now get warnings back on malformed doc comments. That's the most impactful change in this commit. It does not enforce doc comments (again), but _if_ there is a doc comment, it has to have the recommended form. (Most of the changes in this commit are fixing this form.) - Improve wording/spelling of some comments in .golangci.yml, and remove an outdated comment. - Leave `package-comments` inactive, but add a TODO asking if we should change that. - Add a new sub-linter `comment-spacings` (and fix corresponding comments), which avoids missing spaces after the leading `//`. beorn7	c0879d64cf	promql: Separate `Point` into `FPoint` and `HPoint` In other words: Instead of having a “polymorphous” `Point` that can either contain a float value or a histogram value, use an `FPoint` for floats and an `HPoint` for histograms. This seemingly small change has a _lot_ of repercussions throughout the codebase. The idea here is to avoid the increase in size of `Point` arrays that happened after native histograms had been added. The higher-level data structures (`Sample`, `Series`, etc.) are still “polymorphous”. The same idea could be applied to them, but at each step the trade-offs needed to be evaluated. The idea with this change is to do the minimum necessary to get back to pre-histogram performance for functions that do not touch histograms. Here are comparisons for the `changes` function. The test data doesn't include histograms yet. Ideally, there would be no change in the benchmark result at all. For queries with many steps, this commit essentially reinstates the old performance. This is good because the many-step queries are the one that matter most (longest absolute runtime). In terms of allocations, though, this commit doesn't make a dent at all (numbers not shown). The reason is that most of the allocations happen in the sampleRingIterator (in the storage package), which has to be addressed in a separate commit. This adds contexts to the relevant Storage methods and already passes PromQL's new per-query context into the storage's query methods. The immediate motivation supporting multi-tenancy in Frankenstein, but this could also be used by Prometheus's normal local storage to support cancellations and timeouts at some point.	8 years ago
Julius Volz	ed5a0f0abe	promql: Allow per-query contexts. For Weaveworks' Frankenstein, we need to support multitenancy. In Frankenstein, we initially solved this without modifying the promql package at all: we constructed a new promql.Engine for every query and injected a storage implementation into that engine which would be primed to only collect data for a given user. This is problematic to upstream, however. Prometheus assumes that there is only one engine: the query concurrency gate is part of the engine, and the engine contains one central cancellable context to shut down all queries. Also, creating a new engine for every query seems like overkill. Thus, we want to be able to pass per-query contexts into a single engine. This change gets rid of the promql.Engine's built-in base context and allows passing in a per-query context instead. Central cancellation of all queries is still possible by deriving all passed-in contexts from one central one, but this is now the responsibility of the caller. The central query context is now created in main() and passed into the relevant components (web handler / API, rule manager). In a next step, the per-query context would have to be passed to the storage implementation, so that the storage can implement multi-tenancy or other features based on the contextual information.	8 years ago
