TJ Hoplock	6ebfbd2d54	chore!: adopt log/slog, remove go-kit/log For: #14355 This commit updates Prometheus to adopt stdlib's log/slog package in favor of go-kit/log. As part of converting to use slog, several other related changes are required to get prometheus working, including: - removed unused logging util func `RateLimit()` - forward ported the util/logging/Deduper logging by implementing a small custom slog.Handler that does the deduping before chaining log calls to the underlying real slog.Logger - move some of the json file logging functionality to use prom/common package functionality - refactored some of the new json file logging for scraping - changes to promql.QueryLogger interface to swap out logging methods for relevant slog sugar wrappers - updated lots of tests that used/replicated custom logging functionality, attempting to keep the logical goal of the tests consistent after the transition - added a healthy amount of `if logger == nil { $makeLogger }` type conditional checks amongst various functions where none were provided -- old code that used the go-kit/log.Logger interface had several places where there were nil references when trying to use functions like `With()` to add keyvals on the new *slog.Logger type Signed-off-by: TJ Hoplock <t.hoplock@gmail.com>	2 months ago

machine424	caa71fb3c7	chore(storage/remote): collect maxTimestamp when value is 0 as well. This change enables the PrometheusRemoteWriteBehind alert’s expression to be evaluated even when the remote endpoint has never been reached. As a result, PrometheusRemoteWriteBehind will fire to easily detect configuration mistakes (such as incorrect endpoint URLs) or unrecoverable connectivity issues. In #13215 we allowed an existing object to be reused when converting an integer histogram to a float histogram. This commit follows the same idea and allows injecting an existing object in the AtHistogram and AtFloatHistogram methods. When the injected value is nil, iterators allocate new histograms, otherwise they populate and return the injected object. The commit also adds a CopyTo method to Histogram and FloatHistogram which is used in the BufferedIterator to overwrite items in the ring instead of making new copies. This sample is now coming from the buffered iterator used for windowing functions, and can be reused for reading subsequent samples as the iterator progresses. I would propose copying the sample in the last_over_time function, similar to how it is done for rate, sum_over_time and others. In addition to what described in #10420, in this PR I've introduced labels.StableHash(). The idea is to offer an hashing function which doesn't change over time, and that's used by query sharding in order to get a stable behaviour over time. The implementation of labels.StableHash() is the hashing function used by Prometheus before stringlabels, and what's used by Grafana Mimir for query sharding (because built before stringlabels was a thing). Follow up work As mentioned in #10420, if this PR is accepted I'm also open to upload another foundamental piece used by Grafana Mimir query sharding to accelerate the query execution: an optional, configurable and fast in-memory cache for the series hashes. When checking for cache entries though, we used p.Series() as the key, which included the metric name _with_ its labels. That meant that we were never actually hitting the cache. It runs a WAL-only version of prometheus without the TSDB, alerting, or rule evaluations. It is intended to be used to remote_write to Prometheus or another remote_write receiver. By default, prometheus-agent will listen on port 9095 to not collide with the prometheus default of 9090. Truncation of the WAL cooperates on a best-effort case with Remote Write. Every time the WAL is truncated, the minimum timestamp of data to truncate is determined by the lowest sent timestamp of all samples across all remote_write endpoints. This gives loose guarantees that data from the WAL will not try to be removed until the maximum sample lifetime passes or remote_write starts functionining. beorn7	7a8bb8222c	Style cleanup of all the changes in sparsehistogram so far A lot of this code was hacked together, literally during a hackathon. This commit intends not to change the code substantially, but just make the code obey the usual style practices. A (possibly incomplete) list of areas: * Generally address linter warnings. * The `pgk` directory is deprecated as per dev-summit. No new packages should be added to it. I moved the new `pkg/histogram` package to `model` anticipating what's proposed in #9478. * Make the naming of the Sparse Histogram more consistent. Including abbreviations, there were just too many names for it: SparseHistogram, Histogram, Histo, hist, his, shs, h. The idea is to call it "Histogram" in general. Only add "Sparse" if it is needed to avoid confusion with conventional Histograms (which is rare because the TSDB really has no notion of conventional Histograms). Use abbreviations only in local scope, and then really abbreviate (not just removing three out of seven letters like in "Histo"). This is in the spirit of https://github.com/golang/go/wiki/CodeReviewComments#variable-names * Several other minor name changes. * A lot of formatting of doc comments. For one, following https://github.com/golang/go/wiki/CodeReviewComments#comment-sentences , but also layout question, anticipating how things will look like when rendered by `godoc` (even where `godoc` doesn't render them right now because they are for unexported types or not a doc comment at all but just a normal code comment - consistency is queen!). * Re-enabled `TestQueryLog` and `TestEndopints` (they pass now, leaving them disabled was presumably an oversight). * Bucket iterator for histogram.Histogram is now created with a method. * HistogramChunk.iterator now allows iterator recycling. (I think @dieterbe only commented it out because he was confused by the question in the comment.) * HistogramAppender.Append panics now because we decided to treat staleness marker differently. Tom Wilkie	7369561305	Combine Appender.Add and AddFast into a single Append method. (#8489 ) This moves the label lookup into TSDB, whilst still keeping the cached-ref optimisation for repeated Appends. This makes the API easier to consume and implement. In particular this change is motivated by the scrape-time-aggregation work, which I don't think is possible to implement without it as it needs access to label values. Chris Marchbanks	dfad1da296	Remove duplicate metrics in QueueManager Right now any new metrics added for remote write need to be added to both the QueueManager struct, and the queueManagerMetrics struct. Instead, use the queueManagerMetrics struct directly from QueueManager. The newQueueManagerMetrics constructor will now create the metrics for a specific queue with name and endpoint pre-populated, and a new copy of the struct will be created specifically for each queue. Calling NewXMetrics when creating a Watcher or LiveReader results in a registration error, which we're ignoring, and as a result other than the first Watcher/Reader created, we had no metrics for either. All todos I added will be fixed in follow up PRs. * querier.Querier, querier.Appender, querier.SeriesSet, and querier.Series interfaces merged with storage interface.go. All imports that. * querier.SeriesIterator replaced by chunkenc.Iterator * Added chunkenc.Iterator.Seek method and tests for xor implementation (?) * Since we properly handle SelectParams for Select methods I adjusted min max based on that. This should help in terms of performance for queries with functions like offset. * added Seek to deletedIterator and test. * storage/tsdb was removed as it was only a unnecessary glue with incompatible structs.
