This is part of https://github.com/prometheus/prometheus/pull/5882 that can be done to simplify things.
All todos I added will be fixed in follow up PRs.
* querier.Querier, querier.Appender, querier.SeriesSet, and querier.Series interfaces merged
with storage interface.go. All imports that.
* querier.SeriesIterator replaced by chunkenc.Iterator
* Added chunkenc.Iterator.Seek method and tests for xor implementation (?)
* Since we properly handle SelectParams for Select methods I adjusted min max
based on that. This should help in terms of performance for queries with functions like offset.
* added Seek to deletedIterator and test.
* storage/tsdb was removed as it was only a unnecessary glue with incompatible structs.
No logic was changed, only different source of abstractions, so no need for benchmarks.

This adds support for basic authentication which closes#3090
The support for specifying the client timeout was removed as discussed in https://github.com/prometheus/common/pull/123. Marathon was the only sd mechanism doing this and configuring the timeout is done through `Context`.
DC/OS uses a custom `Authorization` header for authenticating. This adds 2 new configuration properties to reflect this.
Existing configuration files that use the bearer token will no longer work. More work is required to make this backwards compatible.
read bearer token on every request
removed unuseful scrape manager startup log

* TotalFoo suggested a comprehensive timing, but TotalEvalTime was part

* The other option was to rename ExecTotalTime to TotalExecTime, but
there was already ExecQueueTime, suggesting Exec to be some sort of
group
API consumers should be able to get insight into the query run times.
The UI currently measures total roundtrip times. This PR allows for more
fine grained metrics to be exposed.
* adds new timer for total execution time (queue + eval)
* expose new timer, queue timer, and eval timer in stats field of the
range query response:
```json
{
"status": "success",
"data": {
"resultType": "matrix",
"result": [],
"stats": {
"execQueueTimeNs": 4683,
"execTotalTimeNs": 2086587,
"totalEvalTimeNs": 2077851
}
}
}
```
* stats field is optional, only set when query parameter `stats` is not
empty
Try it via
```sh
curl 'http://localhost:9090/api/v1/query_range?query=up&start=1486480279&end=1486483879&step=14000&stats=true'
```
Review feedback
* moved query stats json generation to query_stats.go
* use seconds for all query timers
* expose all timers available
* Changed ExecTotalTime string representation from Exec queue total time to Exec total time
Currently all read queries are simply pushed to remote read clients.
This is fine, except for remote storage for wich it unefficient and
make query slower even if remote read is unnecessary.
So we need instead to compare the oldest timestamp in primary/local
storage with the query range lower boundary. If the oldest timestamp
is older than the mint parameter, then there is no need for remote read.
This is an optionnal behavior per remote read client.

Adding tests for util/httputil/client with a 100% coverage.

Adding a new test util to check http.Request in http.RoundTrip interface

Fixing the config/config_test, the discovery/file/file_test and the
promql/promql_test tests for Windows. For most of the tests, the fix involved
correct handling of path separators. In the case of the promql tests, the
issue was related to the removal of the temporal directories used by the
storage. The issue is that the RemoveAll() call returns an error when it
tries to remove a directory which is not empty, which seems to be true due to
some kind of process that is still running after closing the storage. To fix
it I added some retries to the remove of the temporal directories.
Adding tags file from Universal Ctags to .gitignore
Rational:
* When the config is reloaded and the provider context is canceled, we need to
exit the current ZK `TargetProvider.Run` method as a new provider will be
instantiated.
* In case `Stop` is called on the `ZookeeperTreeCache`, the update/events
channel may not be closed as it is shared by multiple caches and would
thus be double closed.
* Stopping all `zookeeperTreeCacheNode`s on teardown ensures all associated
watcher go-routines will be closed eagerly rather than implicityly on
connection close events.
* Add config, HTTP Basic Auth and TLS support to the generic write path.
- Move generic write path configuration to the config file
- Factor out config.TLSConfig -> tlf.Config translation
- Support TLSConfig for generic remote storage
- Rename Run to Start, and make it non-blocking.
- Dedupe code in httputil for TLS config.
- Make remote queue metrics global.
This reverts commit aa43d34a86.
This brings back the /graph changes so that @grandbora can continue to
work on the redirect for backwards compatibility. And other changes
can already take the new /graph parameters into account.
This revert will be reverted once v1.1 is released and has its own
release branch. Since we had already change on top of this, there was
no cleaner way of cutting those changes out.
This commit reverts the following commits:
Revert "Update backend helpers and templates to new url schema"
This reverts commit fc6cdd0611.
Revert "Refactor graph.js"

Revert "Use query parameters in the url"

The main idea is that the user of a storage shouldn't have to deal with
fingerprints anymore, and should not need to do an individual preload
call for each metric. The storage interface needs to be made more
high-level to not expose these details.
This also makes it easier to reuse the same storage interface for remote
storages later, as fewer roundtrips are required and the fingerprint
concept doesn't work well across the network.
NOTE: this deliberately gets rid of a small optimization in the old
query Analyzer, where we dedupe instants and ranges for the same series.
This should have a minor impact, as most queries do not have multiple
selectors loading the same series (and at the same offset).
Prometheus is Apache 2 licensed, and most source files have the
appropriate copyright license header, but some were missing it without
apparent reason. Correct that by adding it.
I needed this today for debugging. It can certainly be improved, but
it's already quite helpful.
I refactored the reading of heads.db files out of persistence, which
is an improvement, too.
I made minor changes to the cli package to allow outputting via the
io.Writer interface.

This remove the last (and in fact bogus) use of BoundaryValues.
Thus, a whole lot of unused (and arguably sub-optimal / ugly) code can
be removed here, too.
It's actually happening in several places (and for flags, we use the
standard Go time.Duration...). This at least reduces all our
home-grown parsing to one place (in model).
nerve's registration format differs from serverset. With this commit
there is now a dedicated treecache file in util,
and two separate files for serverset and nerve.

This adapts some functionality from the Go standard library for string
literal lexing and unquoting/unescaping.
The following string types are now supported:
Double- or single-quoted strings:
These support all escape sequences that Go supports in double-quoted
string literals. The difference is that Prometheus also has
single-quoted strings (instead of single-quoted runes in Go). Raw
newlines are not allowed.
Backtick-quoted raw strings:
Strings quoted in backticks are treated as raw strings just like in Go
and may contain raw newlines and other special characters directly.

incorrect or I felt it was better not to change them at the moment.
Allow scrape_configs to have an optional proxy_url option which specifies
a proxy to be used for all connections to hosts in that config.
Internally this modifies the various client functions to take a *url.URL pointer
which currently must point to an HTTP proxy (but has been left open-ended to
allow the url format to be extended to support others, such as maybe SOCKS if
needed).
Main changes:
- Switched to using `go-bindata` in place of `scripts/embed-static.sh`.
- Support for building Prometheus without a `Makefile`.
- Minor typo fix to make Prometheus build on Windows (without Makefiles).
Please note that this does not mean that prometheus will work on Windows.
There are still failing tests!

It brings the interface back to http.Handler and embedds params in a context.
