Convert remaining int types to fixed
Having internal and external integer types being different hides
potential conversion problems. Propagate that out further (which will
also allow us to better optimize conversion).

Provide flags to use etcd3 backed storage

ref: #24405

What's in this PR?
- Add a new flag "storage-backend" to choose "etcd2" or "etcd3". By default (i.e. empty), it's "etcd2".
- Take out etcd config code into a standalone package and let it create etcd2 or etcd3 storage backend given user input.

Rodolfo Carvalho 9576f71b9a Unify termination signal handling across platforms
- All supported platforms can handle the same set of signals we're
  interested in, thus we don't need build contraints to use a set of
  signals on Linux, while restricting ourselves to only SIGINT on Darwin
  and Windows.
- According to the documentation of os/signal, similar to SIGINT and
  SIGTERM, SIGHUP causes the program to exit, therefore add it to the
  list of handled signals.

k8s-merge-robot 00308f7a9f Merge pull request #24598 from wojtek-t/improve_scheduler_predicates
Automatic merge from submit-queue

Store node information in NodeInfo

This is significantly improving scheduler throughput.

On 1000-node cluster:
- empty cluster: ~70pods/s
- full cluster: ~45pods/s
Drop in throughput is mostly related to priority functions, which I will be looking into next (I already have some PR #24095, but we need for more things before).

This is roughly ~40% increase.
However, we still need better understanding of predicate function, because in my opinion it should be even faster as it is now. I'm going to look into it next week.

Automatic merge from submit-queue

rkt: Add post-start hook support.

This adds a poll-and-timeout procedure after the pod is
started, to make sure the post-start hooks execute when the
container is actually running.

This is a temporal workaround for implementing post-hooks,
a long term solution is to use lifecycle event to trigger
those hooks, see https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/23084.

Also this fixes a bug of getting container ID for a non-running
container when running pre-stop hook.

k8s-merge-robot 32121e344b Merge pull request #24514 from derekwaynecarr/pod_quota_fix
Automatic merge from submit-queue

Quota ignores pod compute resources on updates

Scenario:

1. define a quota Q that tracks memory and cpu
2. create pod P that uses memory=100Mi, cpu=100m
3. update pod P to use memory=50Mi,cpu=10m

Expected Results:
Step 3 should fail with validation error.
Quota Q should not have changed.

Actual Results:
Step 3 fails validation, but quota Q is decremented to have memory usage down 50Mi and cpu usage down 40m. This is because the quota was getting updated even though the pod was going to fail validation.

Fix:
Quota should only support modifying pod compute resources when pods themselves support modifying their compute resources.

This also fixes https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/24352

Fix DeletingLoadBalancer event generation.

release-note:
```release-note
Fix DeletingLoadBalancer event generation.
```

Also patch up a log statement to log the service's namespace and name
rather than potentially just logging `kind:"" apiVersion:""`.

It doesn't work as written because `service` is always nil on this line. If it wasn't, then we wouldn't have taken this branch. `deltaService` is what contains the info that we have about the service.

Example of how the event generation fails as currently written:
```
add user.Info.GetExtra
I found myself wanting this field (or something like it), when trying to plumb the information about which scopes a particular token has.
Only the token authenticators have that information and I don't want tokens to leak past the authenticator.  I thought about extending the `authenticator.Token` interface to include scopes (`[]string`), but that felt a little specific for what I wanted to do.  I came up with this as an alternative.
It allows the token authenticator to fill in the information and authorizers already get handed the `user.Info`.  It means that implementors can choose to tie the layers together if they wish, using whatever data they think is best.
Avoid allocations and a reflect.Call in conversion
reflect.Call is fairly expensive, performing 8 allocations and having to
set up a call stack. Using a fairly straightforward to generate switch
function takes responsibility for invocation). We may also be able to
avoid an allocation for the conversion scope, but not positive yet.
rkt: Return `FinishedAt` for pod
This is implemented via touching a file on stop as a hook in the systemd
In addition, this changes the `startedAt` and `createdAt` to use the api
server's results rather than the annotations it previously used.
It's possible we might want to move this into the api in the future.
I did the following manual testing:
```
$ cat ./examples/output/exit-output.yml
apiVersion: v1
kind: Pod
metadata:
  labels:
    name: exit
  name: exit-output
spec:
  restartPolicy: Never
  containers:
    - name: exit
      image: busybox
      command: ["sh", "-c", "echo Exiting in 60; sleep 60; echo goodbye"]
$ kubectl create -f ./examples/exit/exit-output.yaml
$ # wait
$ kubectl describe pod exit-output | grep State -A 4
    State:		Terminated
      Reason:		Completed
      Exit Code:	0
      Started:		Tue, 19 Apr 2016 13:23:13 -0700
      Finished:		Tue, 19 Apr 2016 13:24:13 -0700
$ kubectl logs exit-output
Exiting in 60
goodbye
```
I double checked as well that the file at `/var/lib/kubelet/pods/$id/finished-$id` existed and looked as expected.
Clayton Coleman 3111985564 Handle streaming serializers more consistently
Add tests to watch behavior in both protocols (http and websocket)
against all 3 media types. Adopt the
`application/vnd.kubernetes.protobuf;stream=watch` media type for the
content that comes back from a watch call so that it can be
distinguished from a Status result.
Default conversion for byte slices is incorrect
Nil slices are getting allocated, which is incorrect and changes
behavior in some cases.
All clients under ClientSet share one RateLimiter.
Currently we create a rate limiter for each client in client set. It makes the reasoning about rate limiting behavior much harder. This PR changes this behavior and now all clients in the set share single rate limiter. Ref. #24157
Rackspace improvements (OpenStack Cinder)
This adds PV support via Cinder on Rackspace clusters. Rackspace Cloud Block Storage is pretty much vanilla OpenStack Cinder, so there is no need for a separate Volume Plugin. Instead I refactored the Cinder/OpenStack interaction a bit (by introducing a CinderProvider Interface and moving the device path detection logic to the OpenStack part).
Right now this is limited to `AttachDisk` and `DetachDisk`. Creation and deletion of Block Storage is not in scope of this PR.
Also the `ExternalID` and `InstanceID` cloud provider methods have been implemented for Rackspace.
Automatic merge from submit-queue
Add mpio support for iscsi
This allows the iscsi volume to check if a iscsi device belongs to a mpio device
If it does belong to the device then we make sure we mount the mpio device instead of
the raw device.
The code is based on the current FibreChannel volume support for mpio
example
/dev/disk/by-path/iqn-example.com.2999 -> /dev/sde
Then we check
/sys/block/[dm-X]/slaves/xx
until we find the [dm-X] containing /dev/sde and mount it
Additional work that can be done in future
1. Add multiple portal support to iscsi
2. Move the FibreChannel volume provider to use the code that has been extracted
Russ Cox 58629a28e4 pkg/registry/pod: avoid allocation in common pod search
PodToSelectableFields creates a map of field attributes
for a particular pod filter query to use. If the result
of the query does not depend on the fields at all, avoid
creating the map.
This is the source of about half the allocated memory
(by byte volume) during the kubemark benchmark, and it
is in turn the main driver of CPU usage during the benchmark,
because of the many background pod watches going on,
as well as the occasional list pods.
These benchmarks for 1000-node kubemark show the difference
from my previous CL (caching timers) to this CL:
Russ Cox 6a19e46ed6 pkg/storage: cache timers
A previous change here replaced time.After with an explicit
timer that can be stopped, to avoid filling up the active timer list
with timers that are no longer needed. But an even better fix is to
reuse the timers across calls, to avoid filling the allocated heap
with work for the garbage collector. On top of that, try a quick
non-blocking send to avoid the timer entirely.
For the e2e 1000-node kubemark test, basically everything gets faster,
some things significantly so. The 90th and 99th percentile for LIST nodes
in particular are the worst case that has caused SLO/SLA problems
in the past, and this reduces 99th percentile by 10%.
Server:
 Version:         1.9.1
Make fake client actions use fully qualified resource
The output of a versioned clientset is version object. The fake client used to assume only internal objects will be returned. This PR removes this assumption by making fake actions initialized with a fully qualified resource instead of a resource string.
We have to regenerate fake clients in release_1_2 clientset to let it compile. For the test fakes, we are breaking the backwards compatibility promise.
Part of #24155.
make storage enablement, serialization, and location orthogonal
This allows a caller (command-line, config, code) to specify multiple separate pieces of config information regarding storage and have them properly composed at runtime.  The information provided is exposed through interfaces to allow alternate implementations, which allows us to change the expression of the config moving forward.  I also fixed up the types to be correct as I moved through.
The same options still exist, but they're composed slightly differently
 1. specify target etcd servers per Group or per GroupResource
 1. specify storage GroupVersions per Groups or per GroupResource
 1. specify etcd prefixes per GroupVersion or per GroupResource
 1. specify that multiple GroupResources share the same location in etcd
 1. enable GroupResources by GroupVersion or by GroupResource whitelist or GroupResource blacklist
The `storage.Interface` is built per GroupResource by:
 1. find the set of possible storage GroupResource based on the priority list of cohabitators
 1. choose a GroupResource from the set by looking at which Groups have the resource enabled
 1. find the target etcd server, etcd prefix, and storage encoding based on the GroupResource
The API server can have its resources separately enabled, but for now I've kept them linked.
@liggitt I think we need this (or something like it) to be able to go from config to these interfaces.  Given another round of refactoring, we may be able to reshape these to be more forward driving.
@smarterclayton this is important for rebasing and for a seamless 1.2 to 1.3 migration for us.
etcd3 store: provide compactor util
What's this PR?
- Provides a util to compact keys in etcd.
Reason:
We want to save the most recent 10 minutes event history. It should be more than enough for slow watchers. It is not number based, so it can tolerate event bursts too. We do not want to save longer since the current storage API cannot take advantage of the multi-version key yet. We might keep a longer history in the future.
etcd3/store: support TTL in Create, Update
ref: https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/22448
What's included in the PR?
- Support TTL keys in Create() and Update()
- Simple testing for create
Note
- Have TTL keys in a long window (5min) in one lease. I'm not sure if we should do it right now. We could just implement it as simple as is. Once we have etcd3 work done we could start testing and measuring with some realistic load.
- By using the watcher, very trivial to implement Watch() and WatchList() in etcd3 storage.Interface implementation.
shared controller informers
Related to https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/14978
This demonstrates how controllers which use an `Informer`, would be able to share the same watch and store.  A similar "setup and run" approach could be done for an `IndexInformer` to share that cache.  I found adding listeners here to be easier than intercepting at the watch interface (problems with resourceVersion) or the reflector (same plumbing, but you have to fan out to multiple stores).
We could also use the cache we build here to back several of the admission plugins that currently run their own lookup caches today.
If there's interest, I can finish out the `SharedInformer` and switch the low hanging fruit over.
Fix PullImage and add corresponding node e2e test
The root cause of #24101 is described [here](https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/24101#issuecomment-208547623).
This PR
1) Fixes #24101 by decoding the messages returned during pulling image, and return error if any of the messages contains error.
2) Add the node e2e test to detect this kind of failure.
3) Get present check out of `ConformanceImage.Remove()` and `ConformanceImage.Pull()`. Because sometimes we may expect error to occur in `PullImage()` and `RemoveImage()`, but even that doesn't happen, the `Present()` check will still return error and let the test pass.
Automatic merge from submit-queue
Expose SummaryProvider for reuse by other parts of kubelet
To support out of resource killing in the kubelet, we will introduce a new top-level module that will ensure node stability by checking if eviction thresholds have been met for memory and file-system usage on the node.  In addition, it will then need information about pod memory and disk usage in order to make an eviction selection.  Currently, this information is collected in `SummaryProvider` but it's hidden away and not available for re-use by other top-level modules of the kubelet.  This initial refactor adds the ability to get summary stat information from the `ResourceAnalyzer` so it can be reused by other top-level modules.
I suspect we will further re-factor this area as code evolves, but this unblocks further progress on out-of-resource killing.
Automatic merge from submit-queue
Add memory available to summary stats provider
To support out of resource killing when low on memory, we want to let operators specify eviction thresholds based on available memory instead of memory usage for ease of use when working with heterogeneous nodes.
So for example, a valid eviction threshold would be the following:
* If node.memory.available < 200Mi for 30s, then evict pod(s)
For the node, `memory.availableBytes` is always known since the `memory.limit_in_bytes` is always known for root cgroup.  For individual containers in pods, we only populate the `availableBytes` if the container was launched with a memory limit specified.  When no memory limit is specified, the cgroupfs sets a value of 1 << 63 in the `memory.limit_in_bytes` so we look for a similar max value to handle unbounded limits, and ignore setting `memory.availableBytes`.
FYI @vishh @timstclair - as discussed on Slack.
Automatic merge from submit-queue
Make etcd cache size configurable
Instead of the prior 50K limit, allow users to specify a more sensible size for their cluster.
I'm not sure what a sensible default is here. I'm still experimenting on my own clusters. 50 gives me a 270MB max footprint. 50K caused my apiserver to run out of memory as it exceeded >2GB. I believe that number is far too large for most people's use cases.
There are some other fundamental issues that I'm not addressing here:
- Old etcd items are cached and potentially never removed (it stores using modifiedIndex, and doesn't remove the old object when it gets updated)
- Cache isn't LRU, so there's no guarantee the cache remains hot. This makes its performance difficult to predict. More of an issue with a smaller cache size.
- 1.2 etcd entries seem to have a larger memory footprint (I never had an issue in 1.1, even though this cache existed there). I suspect that's due to image lists on the node status.
This is provided as a fix for #23323
a patch which changed the GroupVersion, which would fail.
Now, we use a plain deserializer instead, so no conversion or
defaulting occurs when loading in the edited file.
phase 2 of cassandra example overhaul
Here's the next iteration in overhauling this example, towards https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/20961.  This removes the pod adoption part, but doesn't (yet) otherwise change any of the resources used.
It also includes some README cleanup, and removes some explicit specification of labels in the rc yaml.
This PR doesn't yet add any commentary on how we're using the seed provider (re: https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/20961#issuecomment-190405959 etc.).  Maybe we should add that.
Also: LMK if this PR should include any changes to the links out to the docs.
rkt: Use rkt pod's uuid as the systemd service file's name.
Previously, the service file's name is 'k8s_${POD_UID}.service',
which means we need to `systemctl daemon-reload` if the we replace
the content of the service file (e.g. pod is restarted).
However this makes the journal in the previous pod get disconnected.
This PR solves the issue by using the unique rkt uuid as the service
file's name. After the change, the service file's name will be:
'k8s_${rkt_uuid}.service'.
Allow lazy binding in credential providers; don't use it in AWS yet
This is step one for cross-region ECR support and has no visible effects yet.
I'm not crazy about the name LazyProvide. Perhaps the interface method could
remain like that and the package method of the same name could become
LateBind(). I still don't understand why the credential provider has a
DockerConfigEntry that has the same fields but is distinct from
docker.AuthConfiguration. I had to write a converter now that we do that in
more than one place.
In step two, I'll add another intermediate, lazy provider for each AWS region,
whose empty LazyAuthConfiguration will have a refresh time of months or years.
Behind the scenes, it'll use an actual ecrProvider with the usual ~12 hour
credentials, that will get created (and later refreshed) only when kubelet is
attempting to pull an image. If we simply turned ecrProvider directly into a
lazy provider, we would bypass all the caching and get new credentials for
each image pulled.
